Tank-to-Tank Petroleum Transfers
What tank-to-tank transfers are used for, how they are controlled, and when they make sense.
What they are
A tank-to-tank transfer moves product between tanks inside the same terminal, without it leaving the site. It is used to consolidate small parcels, free up a tank, transfer title between parties, or blend compatible products.
How they are controlled
Both tanks are gauged before and after the transfer, and the line route is checked so product goes only where intended. Compatibility is confirmed beforehand; mixing incompatible products can ruin both.
When they make sense
Transfers are quicker and cheaper than moving product out and back in. They are common when a buyer takes over product already in storage, or when a customer wants to combine parcels before a larger outbound movement.
